I’m not surprised, this always seemed unlikely. I supposed you can say that Trump played Kim, given that Kim blew up his nuclear test facility earlier today, but on the other hand, most assessments were that the facility had been damaged beyond repair by the nuclear tests so it’s not much of a loss for North Korea. On the other hand, if the US is seen as using diplomacy as a ruse, and not negotiating in good faith, that will hurt our ability to negotiate in the future. Thinking it is a good idea would definitely fit with Trump’s zero-sum worldview though.

There’s something very theatrical (in the WWE sense) about it. Less staid diplomacy and more Ultimate Trump/Kim Grudge Match.

I wonder what Jinping did to make this happen.

The nuke facility was already ruined, can’t give that to 45.

I mean there’s a lot China could have done, and Summoning Kim back to Beijing certainly makes it seem like maybe they did, though it seems like nuclear disarmament in North Korea would be good for them as well, both because however useful they may be for other purposes, an erratic regime armed with nukes on your border is never really that good, and because it could lead to the US leaving South Korea, which is definitely to China’s advantage.

Of course the US did plenty to sabotage this as well. Certainly if you want to convince someone to give up their nukes, holding Gaddafi up as an example is definitely not the way to go (tip to US negotiators, maybe don’t mention how well it worked for Ukraine either).

Going by the last 30 years worth of history with North Korea, this was probably their end game all along. Look like they’re making concessions by demolishing an already useless test sight and making the US the bad guy by breaking off the summit.

Also.

I think it’s the idea that they are out there, right now, sitting in some room as a silent moment to these two blowhards and their screwups.

I think China got this ball rolling, as 45 adores president-for-life glorified dictator Jinping and no doubt admires the sketchy money aristocracy of his country. As you say, China stands to benefit from a de-escalation or disarming of DPRK too, and China can play 45 like a fiddle. But really, who thought Kim would give up his nukes, for real? They are all he has, his only card.

Yeah, the Libya comment was amusingly bad (not unexpected given the grifters and chickenhawk cronies of this gang), and with so many in the current regime tied to Ukraine, that’s the next step.

Trump legitimized DPRK and played directly into giving Kim Jong the PR stunt they wanted. He got all he could want and we got shit.
